Essential Tips for Maintaining Vinyl Plank Flooring

When it comes to flooring for your conservatory, the options are seemingly endless. Yet, amongst the plethora of choices, a standout contender emerges vinyl plank flooring. This innovative flooring solution not only brings a sleek, contemporary style to your conservatory but also offers practical benefits that are perfect for businesses of all sizes. So, whether you’re a small business owner looking to revamp your workspace, or you run a bustling medium-sized enterprise requiring easy-to-maintain flooring, vinyl plank floors could be the answer. Let’s delve deeper into the world of vinyl plank flooring, and explore why it might be the best flooring for your conservatory.

Today’s vinyl floors have evolved significantly from the shiny, plastic-looking sheet or tile floors that your grandmother might have had in her home. Unlike their predecessors, which were prone to tears, scratches, and scuffs, modern vinyl floors feature more durable matte finishes and realistic, natural designs. They are installed as click-together planks, representing the latest advancements in the category known as “resilient flooring.” The individual plank format also makes it easier to replace damaged sections.

Due to these improvements, contemporary vinyl plank flooring has gained popularity as a viable alternative to wood floors, particularly in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. These floors are not only easier to maintain than traditional hardwood but also more moisture-resistant, making them better equipped to handle heavy traffic—ideal for households with kids and pets.

However, despite their fuss-free and wear-resistant qualities, vinyl floors still require routine care. Even these low-maintenance, durable floors benefit from regular cleaning. It’s advisable to include this task in your regular cleaning schedule. To provide the best cleaning tips and advice, we consulted Carolyn Forté, the executive director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab.

How to clean vinyl plank flooring after installation

Let’s start with the basics: If your vinyl flooring was installed using glue, you might observe excess glue emerging to the surface. To ensure the adhesive sets properly, refrain from cleaning the mess or walking on the flooring for at least 24 hours. Once the adhesive has firmly set, you can safely eliminate the surplus product without causing harm to your recently installed floors by following these steps:

  • Gather the proper tools: You’ll need a scraper, a spray bottle, and a floor stripper or an acetone-based nail polish remover to help loosen the excess glue.
  • Spray the floor: Put the cleaning solution into a spray bottle, then spritz a small amount on the glue you intend to remove. Let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Scrape up the glue: Once the glue begins to soften, position your scraper so that the blade is parallel to the floor and apply gentle downward pressure to carefully remove the adhesive. (You want to get under the blob of glue to gently lift it up off the floor.
  • Wipe clean with water: Once the glue is gone, rinse the area with water using a damp microfiber cloth. Then dry the area with a second clean cloth. Alternatively, you can mop the area for a deeper clean.

How to regularly clean vinyl plank flooring

Vinyl plank flooring may be low maintenance, but there are a few things you should know to help extend the life of this surface. Namely, dust, sand, and other gritty particles are “the enemy,” according to the World Floor Covering Association. As such, it’s important to sweep or vacuum frequently — especially if there’s visible debris on the floor.

  • Remove dust with a soft broom, a microfiber mop, or a good vacuum cleaner designed for hardwood floors.
  • Use your vacuum’s soft-bristled oblong floor brush or fluffy roller attachment if you have them, or at least switch off the vacuum’s rotating brush. Avoid using stiff scrubbing brushes or your vacuum’s beater bar (the rotating brush attachment that vibrates to loosen dirt from carpeting), as these cleaning tools can damage the surface of the floor.
  • Wet-clean the floor using a damp mop and a vinyl-safe floor cleaner once you’ve eliminated any dry dirt and debris.
  • If needed, rinse after mopping, being careful not to over-wet the floor. Let it air-dry.

How to clean spills from vinyl plank flooring

Though vinyl floors are moisture-resistant, it’s not a good idea to let spills set. And you should never use a steam mop on these surfaces. The high temperature combined with excess moisture and pressure can seep into the cracks, loosen the adhesive, and cause the floor to swell. Here’s what to do instead:

  • Use a damp, to wipe up spills as soon as they happen.
  • For tougher stains, you can use a soft nylon brush and a baking soda paste (combine baking soda and enough water to form a paste). Simply use the brush to gently rub the paste into the affected area, then wipe clean with a damp microfiber cloth.
  • Alternatively, you can use a mild cleaning solution made with equal parts vinegar and water. There are also cleaning products, like Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaner, that are specifically manufactured for this type of flooring.
  • Expert tip: No matter what you use, it’s good practice to test your cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area first to make sure it doesn’t damage the flooring.

How to remove scuffs from vinyl plank flooring

Occasional scuff marks caused by shoes or furniture are inevitable, but fortunately, there’s a straightforward method to eliminate these unsightly spots:

Take a microfiber cloth and dip it into a soapy solution of dish soap and water, then use it to gently buff the affected area. Subsequently, rinse the area thoroughly with a damp microfiber cloth or mop.

For persistent scuffs, consider using a lubricant such as WD-40 or Goo Gone. Apply a small amount to a towel and rub it on the affected area until the scuffs disappear. Afterward, follow the cleaning steps mentioned earlier, employing baking soda, vinegar and water, or another cleaning product specifically labeled as safe for vinyl floors to eliminate any remaining lubricant.

How to keep vinyl plank flooring clean longer

While regular upkeep is essential, incorporating a few daily practices can help maintain the cleanliness and condition of your vinyl plank floors, reducing the need for frequent deep cleaning and repairs.

  1. Use doormats or area rugs: Place a doormat or an area rug at the entrance to your home to minimize the amount of dirt and debris tracked inside.
  2. Apply felt or rubber pads to furniture legs: Attach felt or rubber pads to the legs of furniture, especially items that are regularly moved, such as barstools and dining chairs.
  3. Use protective floor coverings during home improvement: When engaging in heavy home improvement activities, such as rearranging furniture or performing tasks like repairing and painting drywall, lay down a protective floor covering to prevent potential damage. Alternatively, you can use cardboard or old towels.
  4. Avoid using harsh chemicals: Don’t use abrasive cleaners, bleach, ammonia, or other corrosive substances on vinyl plank floors as these can damage the surface and cause discoloration.
  5. Act fast when spills occur: Promptly clean up any spills or messes to prevent staining and to avoid accidents caused by slippery floors.
  6. Keep heels and sharp objects off the floor: Avoid walking on vinyl plank flooring with stiletto heels or shoes that have metal cleats, as these can cause dents and scratches. Additionally, keep sharp objects such as pet claws away from the floor to prevent damage.

He used hardwood flooring for the most part of the house and used other types of flooring for special places like washrooms, basement, and porch. He made his choices after extensive research. It was when he was working on that cottage and had to choose from different types of floorings, he realized that there was a need for proper guidance for that which led him to launch this project.
